YOU Decide How to Spend Taxpayer Dollars

New York City is experiencing a new kind of democracy. Through Participatory Budgeting, residents of eight Council Districts have directly decided how to spend $15 million of public money. From September 2013 to April 2014, community members will be exchanging ideas, working together to turn ideas into project proposals, and voting to decide what proposals get funded.

To all who voted or attended a project expo, came to an assembly or facilitated a meeting, made phone calls or door-knocked, proposed a project idea or developed one as a budget delegate--to all the participants in and organizers of this year's PBNYC process--congratulations and thank you for another year of making democracy work! We'll see you again at an assembly in September!

And if you weren't able to participate this year because your Council District isn't part of PBNYC, now is the time to organize for Participatory Budgeting in your community! Contact your Council Member or the candidates running for your district's City Council seat, and ask them if they will launch Participatory Budgeting in your district.

Participate in PBNYC

Eight City Council districts participated in the 2012-2013 Participatory Budgeting cycle: District 8 (Mark-Viverito), District 19 (Halloran), District 23 (Weprin), District 33 (Levin), District 39 (Lander), District 44 (Greenfield), and District 45 (Williams). Find out if you live in one of these districts.

The participatory budgeting process involves a series of meetings that feed into the city’s annual budget cycle. The 2012-2013 process included five main steps, beginning in September 2012 with Neighborhood Assemblies and concluding with the vote in early April.

From November to February, budget delegates transformed their communities' initial project ideas into full proposals. They then presented their proposals to the public during Project Expos in February and March, and voting occured from April 1-7.

Stay turned for important information about the 2013-2014 cycle, which will begin with general assemblies in September 2013, and will take place in at least two addtional City Council Districts.
